Where do I even start?… That’s usually the first question that pops into our minds when we’re facing a big task. And what a big task packing is… Suddenly you realize you didn’t even know you owned this much stuff until it’s time to fit it all into boxes. Where did all of this even come from and what goes first?
Packing really comes down to timing and a plan. Some things can be packed weeks ahead, others need to stay out until moving day. To make it easier, here’s a simple guide to help you figure out what to pack first and what can wait.

Set a Realistic Packing Schedule
First things first: don’t think of packing as one massive job. That’s the fastest way to feel overwhelmed. Instead, break it down into smaller, doable sections, one room or area at a time. It’s much easier to handle, and you’ll actually see your progress as you go.
It can be tempting to put things off (we’ve all done it), but packing everything at the last minute only adds stress. Ideally, begin about four to six weeks before moving day. That might sound like a lot, but the earlier you start, the easier it’ll be to stay organized and avoid long, exhausting days at the end.
What to Pack First
When it comes to packing, a good rule of thumb is to work from least used to most used. That approach keeps your home functional while you prepare for the move and prevents last-minute chaos.
Four to Six Weeks Before Moving
This is when you can start with things you won’t need anytime soon. Pack items that are purely decorative or seasonal.
For example:
- Out-of-season clothing and shoes.
- Holiday decorations or party supplies.
- Books you’ve already read, albums, or collectibles.
- Extra linens, towels, or kitchen items you rarely use.
- Storage spaces like attics, basements, or garages.
This stage is about reducing clutter. The less you have lying around as moving day gets closer, the easier the next steps will feel.
Two to Three Weeks Before Moving
Once your least-used items are packed, focus on the rooms and items you can live without for a short time.
That might include:
- Guest bedroom bedding, décor, or furniture.
- Fragile or decorative items like vases, art, and picture frames.
- Secondary bathroom supplies and extra toiletries.
- Games, toys, or hobby items that can wait until after you’ve moved.
You’ll still want your main living spaces to function, but most of your “extras” can be out of the way by now.
A Week to a Few Days Before Moving
In these final days, what’s left should be the things you use every day such as clothes for the week, your coffee maker, basic cookware, and personal care items. Everything else should be packed and labeled, ready to load.

What to Pack Last (Your Essentials Box)
When you’re down to the final stretch, keep an essentials box aside, it’ll make your first night in your new home much easier.
Pack items you’ll need right away, like:
- A change of clothes and basic toiletries.
- Medications, chargers, and important documents.
- Towels and bedding.
- Snacks, water, and paper plates for a simple first meal.
- Cleaning supplies and a small toolkit.
Keep this box (or suitcase) with you instead of sending it on the truck. After a long day, you’ll thank yourself for not having to dig through piles of boxes just to find your toothbrush.
