When it’s time to pack for a move and start putting everything into boxes, you’ll realize not everything is as simple as tossing it in and sealing it with tape. Sure, there are some things that are easier — like your clothes, that you can just fold them and go. But then there are your dishes… So fragile, so easy to chip. Just thinking about those delicate plates rattling around in a box is enough to make you nervous.
Still, don’t picture the worst. Keeping your dishes safe is easier than it seems, it just takes the right materials and strategy.

What You’ll Need to Pack Your Dishes
- Dish boxes with dividers
- Bubble wrap
- Clean packing paper
- Soft padding like towels or foam sheets
- Strong packing tape
- Marker for labeling
How to Pack Dishes for Moving
Set Up Your Box
Use a dish box with separators. Tape the bottom and add a layer of soft padding, like towels, foam sheets, or bubble wrap, to cushion the base.
Wrap Each Dish
Wrap every plate or bowl. You can use bubble wrap, but plain packing paper also works well and fits better around the edges. Make sure the entire surface is covered. Add a small piece of tape so the wrap doesn’t come loose
Pack Plates Vertically in Small Stacks
Place plates on their sides, not flat. For plates or bowls of the same size, make small vertical stacks of 3–5 wrapped pieces and slide them together into one divider section. Keep the stack snug but not forced.
Fill the Gaps
Add padding around all sides and on top of the dishes to stop them from shifting. You can use bubble wrap, towels, or crumpled paper, whatever keeps everything firmly in place.
Seal and Label

Close the box tightly with strong tape. Label it clearly on every side: “Fragile – Dishes.”
Don’t Have Dish Boxes with Separators?
If you don’t have a dish box (we really recommend that you try to get one), a medium-sized moving box will still do the job. Add plenty of padding at the bottom, then wrap each dish in bubble wrap or packing paper so it fits snugly. Pack them upright and fill any open spaces with towels or paper to keep everything from shifting.
Let the Pros Handle It
If you want to take that off your plate (pun intended) and let your movers handle packing, you absolutely can. Beyond moving things from point A to B, they also know how to pack fragile items safely and have the experience to keep your dishes in one piece so you can focus on more important things.
