Moving can be a lot on you. And after a full day of it, you should be thinking about taking a nice shower and eating something, not looking through boxes for your toothbrush or pajamas.
So, do future you a big favor and pack an essentials box with everything you’ll need for that first night. Here’s what you should include.

First, Keep Your Essentials Box With You
The whole point of an essentials box is to have those things close when you need them, so make sure it doesn’t get mixed in with everything else.
Label it and keep it somewhere easy to grab. If you’re using movers, let them know that box is staying with you and don’t put it on the moving truck. If you’re driving to the new home, keep it in your car with you.
What to Include in an Essential Box for Moving
Start With What You’ll Need That Night
Think about what you usually use at night and when you wake up in the morning. It’s usually things like these:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Soap, shampoo, deodorant, and other toiletries
- Toilet paper
- Medications
- Pajamas and a change of clothes
- Towel
- Sheets, pillows, and a blanket
- Phone and laptop chargers
- Any other electronics you’ll need
A Few Things for the Kitchen and the House
Let’s be honest, it’s unlikely you’ll be preparing a big dinner that first night. Ordering something is always a good idea, but if you’re not, make sure you have something easy to eat and drink.
- Water and snacks
- Something easy for breakfast
- Coffee and whatever you need to make it
- Paper plates, cups, and utensils
- Paper towels
- Trash bags
- Dish soap and a sponge
- A few basic cleaning supplies
- Scissors or a box cutter for opening boxes
If You Have Kids or Pets

Your kids and pets will probably need a couple of other things too. For kids, besides their clothes, toiletries, and the basics we already mentioned, add a few things that will make that first night easier for them.
For kids:
- Their favorite toy or blanket
- A book or something to keep them entertained
- Tablet and charger, if they use one
- Their favorite snacks
For pets:
- Food and treats
- Water bowls
- Leash or carrier
- Waste bags or litter
- Their bed, blanket, or favorite toy
