5 Ways to Spend Less Money While Moving

There’s no beating around the bush: moving is typically an expensive event that most people will experience 2-3 times minimum in their adult lives. While some expenses are cut and dry, there are other ways to make the most of your move without burning a hole through your pocket. At Eco Movers we want to help make your next move as affordable and effortless as possible, so here are our 5 best tips for keeping the spending to a minimum while moving:

Make a Budget

Don’t just make a budget- make a conservative budget… and then stick to it. Take the time to sit down and outline all of the various expenses you’ll have over the course of your move, including: truck rentals, materials, gas, food on the road, cleaning supplies, etc. It’s important to do your homework so you have a reasonable idea of what to expect- and how to plan for it without breaking the bank.

Hire a Reputable Moving Company

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of advice is to always hire a reputable moving company for your big move. This company should come highly recommended, have a great track record full of raving reviews and be willing to go over every detail with you regarding your move and the fees you can expect. Whether you believe it or not, a dishonest or poorly managed moving company can end up costing you more money, time and sometimes even your favorite items in the long run.

Be Smart With What You Move

There are tons of things to take into consideration when planning a move that fits within your budget. From the time of year you move to the items you decide to actually move, there are ways to save money. Don’t move items that have been sitting in your basement or attic untouched for years- especially bulky items that will only cost more to transport. Additionally, the more you can fit in your own personal vehicles- or that of your friends- will mean less that will be tallied up for your bill with the moving company of your choice at the end.

Get Creative With Packing Materials

Packing materials are no doubt a bigger expense than most people expect. Before you know it, you’re out of boxes (again) and need to pick up a few extra rolls of packing tape while you’re at it. Assuming you are going to pack your items yourself with your own materials, we suggest trying to find the highest quality of materials for free- and thankfully, it’s not impossible!

In the weeks leading up to your move contact friends and family to see if they have leftover packing materials they’d be willing to unload. Other options are stopping into your local grocery or department store to inquire about shipping days and whether or not they discard their shipping boxes after unpacking. Typically there are loads of unwanted and quality boxes left behind restaurants, stores, etc.-and if you can get there before the weather takes a toll on them, they can be a great way to score free moving supplies.

Delegate

Finally, you don’t always need to hire a company to pack your items for you. Some people simply don’t have the time, patience or extra hands to do it themselves- and for those occasions, our packing services certainly come in handy. For others however, use the people around you- kids included- to help get the packing done without the added expenses. By delegating tasks to others- and rolling up your own sleeves- you’re ensuring that the job gets done, typically all for the cost of a few pizza pies.
