5 Eco-Friendly Ways to Pack For Your Next Move

You started off the year promising to do better: use less water, turn off the AC, and even bought a reusable water bottle to kick that terrible habit of empty plastic bottles scattered around the house. But now, with your impending move, all you can see is discarded cardboard boxes and endless amounts of trash taking over the curb. While it’s good to be aware of the possible waste at stake, Eco Movers wants to help you move as eco-friendly and stress-free as possible. Read on to find out our top 5 tips for a green packing plan today!

Look Around

When beginning your packing process, take a look around at what you already have available. Many times you can find perfectly reusable containers for packing items in, such as filling up hampers, storing items inside of a storage ottoman or even the reusable plastic shopping bags for things like clothes and toys. Use what’s around you first to transport items before you begin buying or renting additional storage vessels.

Use Plastic Containers

Did you know that plastic containers can be reused upwards of 400 times? When it does come time to start packing into boxes, consider reusable plastic containers instead of cardboard. Whether you choose to buy them and use them again after the move- for storing holiday decorations, for example- or want to rent reusable boxes, this is hands down one of the best ways to avoid the unnecessary amounts of leftover cardboard.

Buy or Use Recycled Boxes

If plastic boxes don’t seem possible- or maybe you’re caught last minute needing a few extra to finish packing- aim to buy or use recycled boxes. Call around to local grocery stores, hardware stores or even your friends to see if they have boxes available to take off their hands.

Reuse/ Recycle Packing Material

While they are often overlooked as a wasteful item, packing materials certainly add up in the end. Instead of throwing away trash bags full of one and done packing supplies, try to first pack with the materials around you. For example, blankets and towels are perfect substitutions to help pad your fragile items instead of plastic bubble wrap. Consider using sheets and pillowcases, as well since you already have to pack these items- now you’re using them in a more helpful and environmentally friendly way.

Use Biodegradable Packing Material

When all of the towels have been used and tablecloths have been packed away, we understand that it’s time to purchase additional packing materials. A great way to continue your eco-friendly movement is to reuse packing materials or buy biodegradable supplies. Take the time to do your due diligence and call local companies to see who has the best price on ecological materials.

Once you do have these materials, save them to reuse for the next move you or a loved one may have. While you never know when you might need them, they are great to have on hand to cut down on your carbon footprint in any way you can.
