How to Pack Lamps for Movers Without Stress or Damage

Moving means dealing with all kinds of items, some that are easy to box up, and others that make you pause and wonder how you’re supposed to pack them. Lamps definitely fall into that second category. They’re fragile, oddly shaped, and one wrong move could leave you with broken glass.

If your moving day’s getting close and you’re trying to figure out how to pack lamps for movers, we’ll show you how to keep them safe and ready to go.

What You’ll Need to Pack Your Lamps

Before you start packing, it helps to gather all your materials in one place. For lamps, you’ll want:

  • A sturdy box tall enough to fit the lamp base (a lamp box if possible)
  • Packing paper or soft cloths
  • Bubble wrap (especially for the base or fragile parts)
  • Packing tape
  • A separate box for the lampshade (ideally)
  • A marker for labeling

Step-by-Step: How to Pack Lamps for Movers

1. Unplug and Clean the Lamp

Make sure it’s cool to the touch and dust-free so nothing gets scratched or dirty in the move.

2. Remove the Lampshade and Harp

Set the light bulb aside and take off the lampshade. If your lamp has a harp (the wire frame holding the shade), take that off too.

3. Wrap the Lamp Base

Use packing paper or a soft towel to wrap the entire base. If it’s especially fragile or heavy (like ceramic or glass), add bubble wrap on top for extra protection. Secure everything with tape, but don’t tape directly onto the lamp.

4. Use a Lamp Box

You can use any tall, sturdy box that fits your lamp, but a lamp box is the best option. These boxes are made to keep lamps upright and help protect fragile bases during the move. Just place the wrapped lamp inside and fill any gaps with crumpled paper or padding so it doesn’t move around.

And don’t worry, lamp boxes are easy to find at most home improvement stores or moving supply shops.

5. Pack the Shade Separately

Don’t wrap it in newspaper (the ink can rub off). Use plain packing paper or a clean pillowcase instead. Place it in a box slightly larger than the shade, with padding around it to avoid dents.

6. Label Both Boxes Clearly

Mark them as “Lamp Base” and “Lampshade – Fragile.” This helps your movers handle them with care, and helps you find them quickly later.
