Moving is a big deal. Even if it’s just a few blocks away, you’re packing up your life, trusting a team with your belongings, and hoping everything gets from point A to point B smoothly. So how do you make the whole thing feel a little less overwhelming?
You start by asking the right questions.
The more you know upfront, the easier it is to spot a good moving company — and avoid headaches later. Here are some key questions to ask moving companies, plus what the answers can tell you about who you’re hiring.
Question to Ask Moving Companies
Are you licensed and insured?

This question should be right at the top of your list. It’s how you know the company is legitimate and accountable. A licensed mover is registered to do the job, and insurance helps cover your belongings in case something unexpected happens during the move.
A professional moving company should have no problem showing proof of insurance and licensing. If they can’t—or avoid the question—it might be a sign to look elsewhere.
How far in advance should I book my move?
You want to ask this early so you can get a clear idea of their availability. Moving companies often fill up quickly, especially during weekends, holidays, or at the end of the month. Knowing their schedule helps you organize your timeline and avoid last-minute stress. It also gives you a realistic window to plan everything else around your move.
Some companies might have last-minute availability, but that’s not always the case. Moves require a lot of coordination, and waiting too long can limit your options.
Do you charge hourly, flat rate, minimum?
It’s a good idea to understand how your mover calculates pricing, that way, you’ll know exactly what to expect and can see if it fits your needs.
Some companies charge hourly, which can be a flexible option for many types of moves, especially when the time and labor involved might vary. Others may offer a flat rate, usually based on things like distance, home size, or a detailed inventory. This gives you one set price from the start.
Many also have a minimum, like a two- or three-hour charge, so even a quick move may be billed for that minimum time. It’s good to know these details ahead of time so you can compare your options and decide what works best.
What’s included in your moving services —and what’s not?
This question should be one of the first ones you ask. You want to know exactly what you’re paying for, and just as importantly, what might cost extra. Some moving companies charge more for heavy or oversized items, stairs, or handling fragile belongings. Getting clarity on what’s included (like furniture protection or disassembly) helps avoid surprise charges on moving day.
Do I need to have my own boxes or packing materials?

Some movers include basic supplies like shrink wrap and furniture pads, while others charge extra for things like boxes or mattress covers. It really depends on the company.
For example, at Eco Movers, we include essentials like shrink wrap, blanket pads, and floor runners with every move. For packing, we offer both cardboard boxes and our reusable, eco-friendly Eco Boxes — all available at cost. Just give us a heads-up if you need them, so we come prepared.
Do you offer packing, unpacking, or storage?
Not every move is as simple as box it, load it, go. You might need help with packing, short-term storage, or getting settled at your new place. Some companies offer full-service options, while others keep it basic. Ask early so you can plan accordingly and choose the level of support you really want.
How many movers will be assigned? What about trucks and timing?
This might seem like a technical detail, but it actually tells you a lot. The number of movers and trucks affects how fast the job goes—and how much it’ll cost if you’re paying hourly. It also helps you understand whether they’re properly resourcing your move or just trying to make do. The more you know here, the easier it is to set realistic expectations.
Are there extra charges for stairs, fuel, or travel time?
These fees can sneak up on you if you don’t ask. Some companies charge by the mile or tack on fees for tricky access points like stairs, elevators, or long walks from truck to door. Others build these into their quote. Better to ask now than wonder what that extra $150 charge is for later.
What’s your policy on cancellations, reschedules, or deposits?
Life happens and sometimes, moving dates need to shift. Ask how flexible the company is with rescheduling and whether you’ll lose your deposit if something changes. (At Eco Movers, for example, there’s no fee to reschedule, as long as you give us a heads-up.)
Do you move pianos, safes, or appliances?
Some items are a lot more complex to move than they seem. Things like pianos, large safes, and appliances are heavy, awkwardly shaped, and often need special handling or equipment. Not every moving company is equipped to handle them, and some may charge extra or require advance notice.
It’s a good idea to ask this upfront. That way, you’ll know if your movers are the right fit or if you need to make other plans.
Are there any hidden fees, overtime charges, or weight limits?
Moves don’t always go exactly as planned—things can take longer than expected, or your items might be heavier than estimated. That’s why it’s important to ask if there are extra charges for time, weight, or anything unexpected. This can help you plan better, stay within budget, and avoid surprises when you get the final bill.
What happens if something gets damaged?

Accidents can happen, even with experienced movers. That’s why it’s good to ask how they handle it if something breaks or gets scratched. Do they have a claims process? Will they offer a repair or refund? A reliable company should be upfront about how they make things right when things don’t go as planned.
Are there items I should move myself?
Most of the time, moving means packing up your whole life. And while we all wish it could be as simple as loading everything into a truck, the reality is that some items are too personal, valuable, or delicate to hand off. Most moving companies won’t transport things like medications, important documents, jewelry, or items that hold sentimental value.
Ask in advance what they do and don’t handle, so you know what to keep aside. That way, there’s no confusion on moving day and your most important items stay safe and within reach.
