How to Pack a Flat Screen TV for Moving

Packing a TV is one of those things that feels like a huge job. They’re so delicate, and the fact that they’re pricey doesn’t help at all. And while it’s easy to imagine the worst-case scenario of a cracked screen, it really might not be as bad as you are making it out to be.

If moving day is creeping up and that TV is starting to make you worry, this short guide should help you pack it up safely and get back to your shows as soon as you’re settled.

What You’ll Need

  • The original TV box (preferably) or an adjustable TV moving box (available at most home improvement retailers and moving supply stores)
  • Foam corner protectors
  • Packing paper
  • Foam sheets, microfiber cloth, or bubble wrap
  • Clean moving blankets
  • Stretch wrap
  • Packing tape
  • A zip-top bag

Step-by-Step: How to Pack a Flat-Screen TV for Movers

1. Unplug and Take a Picture of the Cables

The first thing you should be doing is taking a quick photo of the back of the TV so you remember where each cable goes. Once that’s done, go ahead and unplug everything, keeping the cords, remote, and any small pieces together.

Bundle the cables together with a velcro tie or a rubber band, and place them (along with your remote) into a labeled zip-top bag.

If your TV has a stand that needs to come off, take it apart and keep the hardware in a small bag as well.

2. Protect the Screen

A microfiber cloth or foam sheet is your best bet for covering the screen. Drape it gently over the front, making sure the entire surface is protected. If you end up using bubble wrap, just keep the bubbles facing out so they don’t press into the screen during the move.

3. Add Corner Protection

Use foam corner protectors if you have them. The corners are easy to damage, so you want something that absorbs those impacts during the move.

4. Wrap the TV

Wrap the TV with a moving blanket or soft padding. Secure it with stretch wrap or tape, but don’t tape directly onto the TV.

5. Use the Right Box

The original TV box is the best option. If you don’t have it, use an adjustable TV moving box.

Place the wrapped TV inside. If there’s any wiggle room at all, fill it up with extra packing paper or bubble wrap. You want that TV to be tight in there. The less it moves, the safer it is.

6. Label the Box Clearly

Write Flat-Screen TV, Fragile, and Keep Upright on the box. Make sure it’s so visible that there’s absolutely no way anyone could miss it.

7. Keep the TV Upright

Avoid laying it flat, especially larger LED, QLED, or OLED models, as road vibrations and pressure can stress the screen. Plus, secure the TV against the wall of the moving truck using moving straps, and never stack heavy furniture or boxes against it.

Should You Pack and Move the TV Yourself or Hire Professionals?

If you are staying local and have the right supplies, you can definitely handle this yourself. But if you are moving long distance, or if your TV is huge or high-end, it might be worth hiring the pros for packing. Experienced movers will know how to properly wrap and secure your TV (and all of your belongings), so you’re not worrying about damages along the way.

And at the end of the day, remember you don’t have to do it all yourself. If you’re not feeling 100% sure, just ask your movers to handle it. Just talk to them because there may be an extra cost involved, but it’s honestly worth it if this is stressing you out before the move even starts.

Need a Hand with Your Move?

Packing a TV can be tricky, but there is really no need to let it stress you out. If you have the right supplies and take your time, you can absolutely get it done safely.

That said, if the idea of packing your TV or packing in general is already feeling like too much, let us handle it.
