Moving almost never goes exactly as we want it to. It could be that your new place isn’t ready, or that you’re dealing with a gap between moving out and getting your new keys. When you’re in that situation, you basically have two options to keep your things safe while you figure out everything: Storage-in-Transit (SIT) or a traditional storage unit.
Breaking Down Your Storage Options
Storage-in-Transit (SIT)
This is a temporary service offered by movers for when you can’t get your things into your new place right away. Instead of going directly from your old home to your new one, your items are stored at the moving company’s warehouse until you’re ready to receive them. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to go in to grab anything, so make sure you keep your essentials and whatever you think you may need with you.
Because this is part of your move, it’s all handled through your original agreement and stays on one single bill. It’s a common solution for short-term gaps of a few days or weeks between your move-out and move-in dates (like when you’re waiting for a home closing or finishing renovations) so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of setting up a completely new storage contract elsewhere.

Traditional Storage
Traditional storage is a solution when you need to keep your things somewhere for a longer time. This is the better option if your move-in date is months away or still uncertain.
You have two main ways to handle this: you can ask your moving company about their long-term storage options, or you can rent a unit at an independent storage facility yourself. Either way, you are usually looking at a monthly fee that is separate from your initial moving costs.
Plus, if you need to grab something, you can usually visit the unit whenever you want. Since you aren’t tied to the moving process, you’re in charge of your own items and your own monthly payments.
A Quick Guide to Deciding
Go with SIT if: You’re just waiting a few days or weeks to get the keys to your new home. It saves you from having to move your things twice.
Go with a traditional unit if: You don’t have a concrete move-in date yet, or you need a place to store extra items that won’t fit in your new space.
