How Long Do Long Distance Movers Take?

Planning a long-distance move can be exciting, but let’s be honest, it also comes with a lot of stress. Timing is usually the first thing on your mind. How long will it take to get everything packed? How many days will it be before your things arrive? You’d probably love to snap your fingers and already be settled in your new place, but sometimes moving can take more time than we’d like.

So, how long do long distance movers take? The timeline isn’t the same for everyone, but once you understand what usually shapes the process, it’s much easier to plan ahead and set expectations that actually make sense.

What’s the Usual Timeline?

Ask five people who’ve moved long distance, and you’ll probably hear five different answers. However, most long-distance moves in the U.S. land somewhere between a few days and two weeks. The exact number depends on things like distance, how much you’re moving, and how your movers set up their routes.

A Quick Heads-Up

When you book a long-distance move, the company will give you a delivery window, which is the range of days your items are expected to arrive. For example, they might say your delivery window is between day 5 and day 10. The mover must deliver your goods within this timeframe, but they are not obligated to deliver on a specific day within that window. It’s important to be flexible and have a plan for potential delays.

Factors That Determine Your Long Distance Moving Timeline

Distance

The farther you’re going, the longer it takes, it’s that simple. A move within the region, like Seattle to Portland, Oregon, might only take a couple of days. But if you’re headed across the country, for example from Seattle to Chicago, you’re more likely looking at a week or two. Movers have to plan routes, rest stops, and driver schedules, all of which add time to the clock.

Inventory Size

A one-bedroom apartment can usually be packed and loaded in a matter of hours, while a four-bedroom house might take a full day or more. More belongings also mean a larger truck, which sometimes requires extra logistics like weigh station stops or special permits. The more you bring, the more moving parts to coordinate.

Access

Not all homes are equally easy to move in or out of. A ground-floor apartment with a wide driveway makes things simple. But if your movers have to navigate narrow staircases, long hallways, or tricky parking, loading and unloading can add hours to the timeline. On the delivery side, urban settings with no curbside parking can slow things down, too.

Curbside vs. Full-Service

What kind of service you choose makes a big difference. A curbside drop-off (Where movers unload everything at once without setting up) will be much quicker. Full-service moves that include packing, furniture disassembly, or room-by-room setup take longer, but they save you time and effort later.

Logistics and Scheduling

Long-distance movers can combine shipments from multiple customers in the same truck. This helps keep costs manageable, but it can also stretch your delivery window depending on where you fall in the route. Dedicated trucks are faster but more expensive. On top of that, driver availability, weigh stations, and federal driving limits all play into scheduling.

Season and Weather

When you move matters, too. Summer is the busiest moving season in the U.S., so schedules book up quickly and trucks may be fuller, sometimes leading to longer delivery windows. Winter moves often have more flexible schedules but come with the risk of delays from snow or icy roads. Even heavy rain or hurricanes in certain regions can push back delivery times.

Typical Timeframes for Long-Distance Moves

While no two moves are identical, long-distance movers in the U.S. usually work within some pretty clear ranges.

  • Within the West Coast and Pacific Northwest (for example, Seattle to Portland or down to Northern California): typically 1–3 days.
  • Toward the Mountain States or Midwest (Seattle to Denver or Chicago): closer to 3–7 days.
  • Heading South (Seattle to Texas or Florida): usually 5–10 days.
  • Cross-country to the East Coast (Seattle to New York, Boston, or D.C.): often 7–14 days.

Most of these timelines assume your move is on a dedicated truck, where your things go straight from your old home to your new one. If your movers load your belongings together with other households, expect the trip to take a little longer. Those extra stops along the route can add a few days to the delivery.

A Practical Checklist for Your Move

Here’s a simple guide to keep in mind as moving day gets closer:

2–3 Weeks Before the Move

  • Confirm pickup and delivery windows with your movers.
  • Ask if your shipment will be on a dedicated truck or combined with others.
  • Start setting aside valuables, medications, and important documents to keep with you.
  • Start packing items you don’t use every day: off-season clothes, décor, books, extra kitchenware.

1–2 Weeks Before the Move

  • Pack most of your household, leaving out only the things you’ll need for daily life (like toiletries, a few outfits, and cooking basics).
  • Double-check fragile items are packed securely.

3–5 Days Before the Move

  • Pack a personal essentials bag with clothes, toiletries, chargers, and snacks.
  • Double-check access: reserve elevators, clear hallways, and secure parking for the truck.
  • Communicate any last-minute details with your moving company.

On Moving Day and During Transit

  • Stay flexible. Delays from weather or traffic can shift delivery by a day or two.
  • Keep in touch with your movers for updates while your belongings are on the road.
  • Review the inventory list before the truck leaves, so you know exactly what’s being transported.
