Helpful Tips for Moving Into a New House

Moving into a new house comes with a mix of excitement and stress. It’s a fresh start, but packing up your whole life and starting over in a new space can feel a bit overwhelming. A few simple tips can help make those first days easier and help your new place feel like home sooner.

Before You Move In

Those first days in a new place can feel like a walk in the park or completely chaotic, and a lot of that depends on what you took care of before move-in day.

Get the Basics Set Up Early

Get your utilities, internet, trash service, and any HOA access set up before you move in. It’s no fun to spend your first night in the dark with no Wi-Fi. It also helps to update your address with USPS, banks, subscriptions, and your employer ahead of time so your mail actually follows you to the new place.

Take Quick Inventory Photos

Before you start unplugging everything, take a quick photo of the back of your TV, router, or computer so you know how everything goes back together later. It also helps to snap a few pictures of any high-value items so you have a record of what they looked like before the move.

Pack With a Plan

The way you pack now will affect how easy it is to settle in later. Keep in mind that you’re going to unpack all of this, so make it easier on yourself. Color-code boxes by room and write notes like “open first” or “can wait”. It will save you from ripping through random boxes when you’re tired and just want to find your stuff.

Also, not everything packs the same way. Some things need a little more care if you want them to show up in one piece.

As Jordan Pope, Digital Operations Manager at Eco Movers and former mover, puts it:

“In my experience the biggest risk for damage to belongings during a move is improper packing. When packing your belongings, it is very important to ensure that everything is packed in such a manner that the simple act of moving the boxes does not result in damage. I could go into significant detail on this subject, and there are many blog posts about how to pack certain types of items like dishware on our website. But for the sake of brevity, I will just say this: for each variety of item that you plan to pack, from books, to dishes, small statues or plants, make sure to research the best way to pack them for a move, instead of just throwing them in a box, if you want to ensure it arrives safely at the destination. If you’re really unsure, it may be best to leave the task of packing to the movers, although it’s important to remember that additional service typically comes at a premium cost.

Small details in packing like these ones tend to show up in a big way once you’re in your new home. It’s one of the reasons our team at Eco Movers puts so much care into how we handle each move and it’s part of why our approach has been recognized beyond just our own customers.

Save Yourself Time on Moving Day

Speaking of movers… Measure doorways and big furniture ahead of time. Have a rough idea of where big pieces will go so movers aren’t playing real-life Tetris for hours. If you’re moving yourself, load essentials last so they come off the truck first.

Prepare an Open First Box or Bag

Pack one small bag or clear bin with the things you’ll want right away: chargers, medication, paper towels, trash bags, a change of clothes, and a couple of basic tools. Think of it as your first-night kit. When the rest of the house is a sea of boxes, future you will be very glad past you thought this through.

Getting Settled in Your New Place

With the heavy lifting behind you, it’s time to shift into “make this feel like home” mode.

Do a Quick Clean and Walkthrough

You might not feel like cleaning right away, but this is actually the easiest moment to do it. If you can, take a few minutes to walk through the place before any furniture comes in. You’ll find it so much easier to wipe down cabinets, baseboards, and floors when the rooms are still empty.

This is also a perfect time to really look around and check for any little marks or problems in the house you might’ve missed before.

Take Care of Safety Basics

Change the locks as soon as you can. You never really know who still has a spare key from before, and there’s nothing like feeling safe in your own place. It’s also a small way to make the house feel like it’s truly yours from day one.

Then do a quick check of the “big three”: make sure the smoke detectors work, find the circuit breaker, and locate the main water shut-off. You don’t want to be hunting for these in case something goes wrong.

Be Smart About Unpacking

First thing you need to do is to get the bed made and the bathroom usable. That’s it. Once you can sleep and shower normally, the rest won’t feel so overwhelming. Besides, there’s no prize for finishing unpacking everything on day one so there’s no need to rush.

Make It Feel Like Home

Walking into a new place with nothing set up yet can feel weird. Putting one familiar thing out right away helps ground you. It could be a photo, a plant, or your coffee mug… Whatever you think will help make this new, “strange space” feel more like home.

Take It Easy (and Ask for Help When You Need It)

Give yourself some grace those first couple of weeks. You may move furniture three times, you may discover that one outlet is in the worst possible spot. That’s all part of settling in. A house will start to feel like home as you live in it and shape it to fit your life.

And if the moving part of this whole process still feels like a lot, you don’t have to handle it alone. Eco Movers is here to help make that transition into your new place smoother, whether you need full support or just an extra set of hands. Get in touch for a free moving quote
