You’ve got the moving appointment booked, the date on the calendar, and a long to-do list ahead. But… Do you have the boxes to start packing all of it? And how do you even find that many? Before box hunting turns into another chore you didn’t plan for, hold off for a moment. Boxes might be one less thing to worry about.
Do Moving Companies Provide Boxes?
Most of the time they do! That said, they’re not always included by default. In many cases, boxes are offered as an add-on or included only if you’re also using packing services.
This is usually something you need to ask about ahead of time. Some movers provide boxes at cost, some bundle them with packing, and others expect you to handle boxes yourself unless you request them.

What Are Your Options?
Cardboard Boxes
These are the most common. They are available in standard sizes, although some movers also provide specialty boxes for dishes, wardrobes, TVs, paintings, and lamps. These are a great option if you are planning to store things or need boxes for a long time.
Most movers provide sturdy boxes, which are designed to last longer than the average boxes you can find on your own.
Eco-Friendly Options
Some moving companies also offer eco-friendly alternatives to cardboard, though this isn’t the standard everywhere yet.
They usually come in a standard size, are easy to stack, don’t require tape, and are then picked up after the move is complete to be used for the next customer. However, this option may not be available, so it is a good idea to ask ahead of time if this is something you would like for your move.
Selecting Boxes for Your Move
So what are the best boxes for your move?
Cardboard boxes are great when you need variety. They come in many sizes, including boxes made for plates, glasses, clothes, TVs, and artwork. That makes them a solid choice for fragile or specialty items.
Keep in mind that cardboard requires tape, can break down with moisture, and often leaves you with a lot to recycle once the move is over.
On the other hand, reusable plastic boxes don’t vary much in size, but they’re eco-friendlier as they cut down on a lot of waste. They’re durable, easier to manage, stack well, don’t need tape, and once the move is over, you simply return them. No need to figure out how to deal with a pile of cardboard once you finish unpacking.
Many moves end up using a mix of both, depending on what’s being packed. Always talk to your movers about your needs and go from there.
