Taping boxes seems basic, until the bottom drops out at the worst time. Most people just tape the top and hope for the best, but a few simple steps can save you an unpleasant surprise mid-move. Here’s what actually works.

What’s the Best Tape for Moving Boxes?
You should be using packing tape. It’s made to stick to cardboard and hold weight. Duct tape and masking tape don’t hold up well and tend to peel, especially if boxes sit for a bit or get cold.
How to Tape Moving Boxes
Always Tape the Bottom Before Packing Anything
Skipping this is a common reason boxes fall apart. Before you start adding your stuff, tape the bottom seams. This makes a big difference when the box it’s heavy, like when you’re packing things like books, dishes, or tools.
Run one strip of tape straight down the center seam, then add one strip across each side seam. This is called the H taping method, and it helps keep the box from splitting.
Pack the Box, Then Seal the Top the Same Way
After you’ve packed everything in, tape the top using the same H pattern. Center seam first, then the sides. Press the tape down as you go so it actually sticks.
Pay Attention to the Corners
The corners bear a lot of pressure when boxes are lifted and stacked. If a box feels weak, add a short strip of tape along the corner to reinforce it.

Don’t Overdo It
More tape doesn’t actually make a box stronger. It’s easy to keep adding and adding “just in case,” but a few well-placed strips do the job better. And on unpacking day, you’ll be glad you’re not cutting through layers of tape just to open one box.
Do a Quick Check Before Stacking
Give the box a light lift. If it feels solid and nothing shifts, you’re good. If it flexes or creaks, add tape where it feels weak.
