Books might not look fragile, but when it’s time to move, they can be surprisingly tricky. Pile too many in one box and you’ll have sore arms (or a broken box). Pack them wrong, and covers or spines can warp before you even make it out the door.
And of course, you want to bring them all — your favorite novels, the cookbooks you actually use, the thrillers you can’t put down. With a little prep and the right packing method, you can keep your collection safe, organized, and ready to unpack.

Consider Downsizing First
Books can stack up quickly, and they’re heavier than they look. Before you start packing, take a few minutes to go through your collection and decide what’s worth bringing. Keep the ones you love or know you’ll read again, and pass the rest along.
You can donate to a local library, give a few to friends, or drop them off at a neighborhood book box. Selling special editions or extras to a used bookstore works too. You’ll save space, cut down on boxes, and make unpacking a lot easier later.
What You’ll Need to Pack Books
- Small, sturdy boxes (best: 1.5 cu ft “book boxes”) Aim for 12″×12″×16″ or 16″×12″×12″. The smaller they are the safer for your back and less chance of the bottom giving out.
- Packing paper (or clean kraft paper)
- Packing tape (reinforce the bottom seams)
- Marker for labels
- Bubble wrap (optional) for collectibles or delicate dust jackets
- Stretch wrap (optional) to bundle sets
Pro Tip: If you’re running out of boxes, rolling suitcases make great book carriers. Pack them tight and upright to keep the spines in shape and the weight balanced. It’s easier on your back, easier to move, and one less thing to worry about on moving day.
Step-by-Step: How to Pack Books for Moving
Build and Prep the Box
Use a small, sturdy box (around 1.5 cu ft). Tape the bottom seam twice, add a strip the other way for support, and lay a sheet of packing paper on the bottom.
Start with the Heavy Ones
Put big hardcovers and coffee-table books flat on the bottom. That protects the spines and keeps the weight low where it belongs.
Add Standard Books the Right Way
Pack regular hardcovers and paperbacks upright like on a shelf (spines against the box wall, pages facing in), or spine-down on their edge. Don’t pack spine-up as it weakens the binding.
Fill Gaps as You Go
Tuck small paperbacks or crumpled paper into corners so rows stay snug and nothing shifts.
Mix the Weight
Don’t make one side all heavy hardcovers. Blend in lighter paperbacks so the box lifts evenly.
Top It Off with Padding
When the box is nearly full, add a “pillow” of crumpled paper on top. That keeps books from sliding and protects the covers.
Watch the Weight
Cap each box around 35–40 lbs. If it feels heavy now, it’ll feel twice as heavy on stairs.
Seal and Label
Tape the top seam twice. If you’re feeling organized, take a minute to label your boxes by categories instead of just “Books”. A quick note like “Office – Fiction” or “Kitchen – Cookbooks” will save you a lot of guesswork once you’re surrounded by boxes.

Special Note on Hardcovers and Collectibles
Hardcovers and collectible books need a little extra care. Slip a sheet of packing paper between the dust jacket and the cover to keep it from rubbing or tearing, then wrap the book loosely in paper. If you’re packing antiques or rare editions, wrap each one separately (first in paper, then in bubble wrap) and pack them flat with padding on all sides so they don’t shift.
Leather-bound books are a bit more delicate, so keep them away from moisture and avoid stacking heavy books on top.
